Based on Bukowski's “Copulating Mermaid of Venice, CA,” this unsavory story follows two pathetic barflies. On their way to the pensione where they both live, they spot a parked ambulance. Presumably accustomed to corpses in this old port town, they decide to steal one and take it back to their apartment. Several drinks later, the body bag is opened to reveal a beautiful, freshly-dead young woman—and the best sex they’ve ever had. One falls helplessly and disturbingly in love, but when the sun comes up, he must let her go.

Un Chant d’Amour

Jean Genet

France, 1950, 26 min

Originally made for Parisian gay porn collectors in 1950, Genet’s film is reminiscent of Jean Cocteau’s “Blood of a Poet” and Kenneth Anger’s “Fireworks.” The story of a guard and two prisoners is a voyeuristic, confrontational masterpiece. Forbidden in France upon its release, and previously only available in the US in censored form, “Un Chant d’Amour” is now presented in its complete version.

El Doctor

Suzanne Pitt

Mexico/ USA, 2006, 24 min

This exquisitely animated poem, hand painted in LA and Mexico over five years, is set in a crumbling Mexican hospital circa 1920. Surrounded by surreal characters—the man shot with 100 holes, the girl who sprouted morning-glories, the woman who thinks she’s a horse—the Doctor prefers to drink. But redemption awaits.
