Conor McMahon
2004, Ireland, 80 minutes

Attention gorehounds and zombie fanatics (you know who you are), we have exactly what you’re looking for – a smart, serious (and very gory) zombie movie to whet your appetite for the soon-to-be-released Land of the Dead.

Hell on Earth (or more specifically Ireland) is unleashed when a mutated strain of mad cow disease infects the countryside turning people into flesh-eating zombies. Caught amidst this chaos is Helena, a young Spanish tourist and Desmond, the local gravedigger. Armed with nothing but a shovel this unlikely duo must fight for survival before they become the tasty main course for the ever-increasing herds of ravenous zombies.

Simultaneously honoring the venerable flesh-eating tradition set up by the Romero zombie films while adding a post-BSE spin to the proceedings, McMahon’s film delivers the goods and adds some bizarre and unforgettable imagery to the rotting, shambling and chomping modern monster mythology. Moo!
