The North Beach Jazz Festival (July 29-August 6) will host
a benefit event for the San Francisco Independent Film Festival
(AKA SF IndieFest) on Monday July 31, 2000
at the Broadway Studios, 435 Broadway in San Francisco.
The event features the Jazz Divas Kitty Margolis and Dena
DeRose. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors
d'oeuvres. The event opens with Dena at 9:00 p. m. and features
Kitty at 10 p.m.
The joining of the IndieFest with the six-year-old Jazz Festival
is a natural meeting of like interests. The film and music
worlds have always been closely connected, one can't think
of the early jazz age without including the great musicals
from the era. The North Beach Jazz Festival, an innovative
fest with "a genuine people's vibe" (SF Sidewalk) and the
IndieFest's "unique program of films that can't find homes
elsewhere" (FilmThreat) both present the Bay Area's underground
art lovers unique, creative and innovative programming that
can't be found anywhere else in the city.
The January 2000 IndieFest included DUMBARTON BRIDGE, a great
new film by Charles Koppelman, an East Bay filmmaker and jazz
lover who scored his film with Coltrain classics. This year
the North Beach Jazz Festival will be including a film in
its program, the world premiere of LIVE FROM SOMEWHERE,
directed by Tony Maniaci and Brandon Heidt. This is the first
time that NBJF introduces film as part of its nine-day program.
"We felt that the subject matter tied in with the Festival
and the Festival goals of stimulating a jazz renaissance in
North Beach," says NBJF co-producer Herve Ernest. "Many of
the musicians in the film are performing at the North Beach
Jazz Festival. We are very excited that they chose the North
Beach jazz scene as the subject for their first film."
San Francisco jazz lovers can look forward to a special North
Beach Jazz Fest appearance at this January's IndieFest, taking
place January 11-21, 2001.
Tickets for the July 31, 2000 IndieFest benefit are $45 and
