"Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Jesus Christ, Lenny Bruce -- those are the people I identify with," says Friedman, and by the end of de Vries' doc, you realize this crazy Jew fits right in among those other iconoclastic luminaries. Its contribution has been largely overlooked, as has the fun, expressive, human, and spontaneous dimension of hip-hop that it represents. Through archival footage, animation, interviews, and live performances by Beat Box pioneers Doug E. Fresh, Biz Markie , The Fat Boys and Zap Mama, this doc traces the art form from its roots in world music to the multi-layered, polyrhythmic figureheads of present day such as Scratch of The Roots, and Rahzel, the Godfather of Noyze . Breath Control presents a laid-back musical history that links the art form of beat boxing to centuries of oral tradition from around the globe.
